One of the most substantial earthquakes in Morocco’s history likely damaged one of its only ski resorts.

On Friday night, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the African country. Its epicenter has been listed as in the Moroccan High Atlas mountain range, and around 35 miles from the Oukaïmeden ski resort. As of Sunday morning, NBC News lists the death count as over 2,000 people and over 2,000 individuals are dealing with injuries. Many structures in the city of Marrakech were destroyed, and various historic buildings saw damage.

Oukaïmeden has the highest elevation of any ski resort on the continent, with 10 km/6.2 miles of slopes and seven lifts. The ski resort is also home to an astronomy center and the land it sits on features historic rock engravings from 3500 B.C. The closest major city to the ski resort is Marrakech.

We have yet to find any reports on the damage to Oukaïmeden and have reached out to the ski resort for comment.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Morocco during this trying time.
