It has been a poor ski season for snow so far but now it is falling with avalanche warnings in place in some areas. NEW
There has been heavy snow on the North Island with avalanches set off near the resorts of Turoa and Whakapapa.
Ski patrollers have triggered several avalanches over the past 48-hours.
One avalanche was 200m wide and 1.4m deep.
New Zealand Avalanche Advisory recommends against high alpine backcountry travel in the area.

There has been snow and some better conditions on the South Island.
It follows a generally poor winter in New Zealand so far.
