The New Zealand ski season has been off to a slow start. Mt. Hutt was able to open on June 10th, but it was mostly thanks to their ability to make snow. Other ski resorts, like The Remarkables and Cardrona, have opened for the season, but are currently operating with a limited amount of terrain.
Since then, the thin man-made snowpack at Mt. Hutt has taken a hit thanks to 40 mm (1.575 inches) of rain over the past couple of days. Due to this, Mt. Hutt announced yesterday that they will be temporarily shutting down their lifts. This could be an extended closure, as they won’t be reaching snowmaking temperatures for the next couple of days. Webcam images show a very minimal snowpack at the ski resort, so they have a lot of work to do.
The weekend looks cooler and potentially snowier for them so this will be what hopefully turns their season around. In the meantime, do your best snow dances.
