Going-to-the-Sun Road Celebrates Earliest Opening Since 2005

Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road officially opened for motorized vehicles Tuesday marking the earliest opening of the Going-to-the-Sun Road since 2005.

8KPAX spoke with Glacier National Park spokeswoman Gina Icenoggle who had this to say about the early opening of the world renown scenic alpine highway:

“Mother Nature decides when Going-to-the-Sun Road opens, and we just assist. We saw average or slightly below average snowpacks and we had some warm days that helped with melting out, rain also came through and assisted with rushing the melting of the snow, so we had a lot of things on our side that helped us open earlier this year,”

While the Going-to-the-Sun Road won’t likely close until fall due to snow accumulation on the road, heavy rainfall can cause rock slides leading temporary closures. Park visitors are encouraged to check the latest road conditions HERE.

Also a vehicle reservation is required for four areas of the park including Going-to-the-Sun Road. Find  vehicle reservation detail HERE:
