Little Cottonwood Canyon’s Road Closed Indefinitely

The risk of wet avalanche slides continues to be a problem this Spring in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Yesterday, UDOT announced that Little Cottonwood Canyon’s road, SR-210, will be closed starting at 9 am today. There is no estimated time for a public reopening.

It sounds like travel between Snowbird and Alta will be allowed, but it will not be possible to get up from the mouth of the canyon, and going back down to the Valley is now impossible. With warm weather expected throughout this week, wet slides are bound to happen. In addition, Big Cottonwood Canyon’s road, SR-190, will be closed today from 12-5 pm due to avalanche hazards.

There’s no word yet if Snowbird’s lift operations will be affected by this. When they faced a situation like this a couple of weeks ago, a limited amount of lifts and restaurants were open. Alta is closed for the season but is open for uphill travelers. We’ll keep you posted as to when SR-210 reopens to the public.
