Utah is in the midst of another deep powder cycle. So far, the storm has produced 37″ of snow at Snowbird and 37″ at Alta over the past 48 hours. This snowfall at Snowbird has brought their total snowfall for the season up to 785″, which broke their previous record.
Dealing with this frequent snowfall has become a problem for avalanche mitigation. This latest storm has kept SR-210, which is the Little Cottonwood Canyon Road, closed for the foreseeable future.
On Monday, this meant that Snowbird and Alta had a country club day. This is when the road is closed, but interlodge has been lifted, meaning that skiers can shred the mountain without the hordes of people that typically drive up the canyon.
So far today, interlodge has remained in effect, so no one can go outside and shred. Alta and Snowbird have announced they won’t run their lifts today, and the time that interlodge will end is unclear. Additionally, SR-210 is not expected to open today.
We’ll keep you posted on the latest developments regarding Little Cottonwood’s road closure.
