Opinion: Why Backcountry Skiing is Better Than Resort Skiing

This is a guest essay written as an opinion piece and sent to Unofficial Networks by Canadian Gus Hoffman.

You took up skiing because you wanted a life full of true adventure? You want to experience the raw power and beauty of the mountains? Well, if this is what you’re after, then head into the backcountry.

Forget about those overpriced and overcrowded ski resorts. Backcountry skiing is where the real soul of skiing is. It’s just you, your gear, your pals, and the mountain. No fancy lodges, no overpriced food, no liftlines.

The backcountry is where you can truly appreciate the majesty and grandeur of the mountains. You’re not just a spectator, watching from afar. No, you’re right in the middle of it all, experiencing the raw power and beauty of nature up close and personal. You are connected to it as you push yourself, moving through gorgeous scenery.

But backcountry skiing is not for the faint of heart and you need to put in the work. It takes guts, determination, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. But for those who are willing to take the risk, the rewards are infinite.

And sure, backcountry skiing can be dangerous. Avalanches, hidden crevasses, and inclement weather are just some of the hazards you face in the backcountry. But that’s part of the thrill. Building up your skill set to be able to navigate the backcountry safely is one of the sport’s great pleasures.

If you are already a backcountry skier, you know what we’re talking about. If your thinking about taking it up, go for it.  You’ll feel alive, invigorated, and totally in control of your own destiny.

See you on the skin track.
