Massive Avalanche At Himalayan Ski Resort Kills Two People

“We saw the dance of death before our eyes. A 20-foot wall of ice fell on the skiers and they got buried under it. It’s all about nature’s fury.”Deepak Chinchore, All India Congress Committee member.

One of the worst avalanches of the 2022-23 winter season happened on Wednesday at Gulmarg Ski Resort in the Jammu and Kashmir regions of India. The Times India reports that two Polish Nationals died, while 19 foreign nationals were rescued. The deceased individuals were identified as Krzysltof and Adam Grzech.

The accident occurred in the Hapatkhud Kangdori area, which was declared a no-go zone for skiers due to the heightened risk of avalanches. The incident was caused by heavy snowfall, which happened on January 29th and 30th.

Gulmarg is no stranger to tragic avalanches. On February 8th, 2010, a massive avalanche killed 17 soldiers from an army camp. The ski resort boundary is pretty narrow, with many steep mountainous peaks around it, which leads to heightened avalanche risk.

We send our condolences to the family and friends of the victims during this challenging time.
