The German tourism business TUI has introduced the TUI Ski Express in cooperation with GreenCityTrip. Next winter there is also an overnight train from Holland to the French Alps. NEW
TUI operates the UK’s largest ski operator, Crystal Ski Holidays.
From December 23rd 2022 a new night train services will depart from Amsterdam to ski resorts in the Tirol and the Salzburgerland area of Austria.
The Ski Express will depart on Friday evening at 5.30pm and will also call at Utrecht.
The night train will cross the Austrian border near Wörgl where it will be split into services to Tirol and the Salzburgerland with an arrival time on Saturday morning.
“The train is a great alternative means of transport for a number of destinations. Holidaymakers above all want comfortable and easy travel, it’s up to us to bring that together,” said the general manager of TUI Netherlands, Arjan Kers.
PlanetSKI took a similar route back in 2020, taking the Eurostar to Amsterdam and then boarding the night train:
“After the successful start of our cooperation earlier this summer, we are very happy to bring a winter holiday product to the market with TUI. We are confident of its potential,” said a statement from GreenCityTrip.
TUI points to the untapped potential of winter travel to the Alps by train.
According to TUI only 8% of travellers takes the train at present.
It also says that of the people interested in skiing holidays, some 87% would be inclined to take a night train.
The Ski Express will run until March 31st 2023.
Sunweb and European Sleeper will be running winter night train services to the French Alps.
The European Environment Agency says rail travel accounts for 14 grams of CO2 emissions per passenger mile.
Air travel generates 285 grams per passenger mile.
