The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office (Michigan) is being celebrated for their efforts to rescue a man’s prosthetic leg from the bottom of a Detroit-area lake.

Brandon Smith’s prosthetic leg sunk to the bottom of Sunrise Lake in Milford Township, MI while him and his son were floating on a raft. The prosthetic plunged 50 feet to the bottom of the lake, and the family was unable to recover it.

Smith injured his leg in a hunting accident six years ago. He went through 17 surgeries, and acquired the $80,000 prosthetic just over a month ago to restore some of his mobility. Losing it was devastating.

Smith contacted the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office to ask for help. The office dispatched their dive team using GPS coordinates provided by the family, and were able to recover the prosthetic after just 10 minutes in the water.

Pretty incredible story, right?

The Sheriff’s office could have easily denied the request since it wasn’t a life-threatening situation, but they didn’t. They went out of their way to recover a life-impacting (and expensive) device for somebody in need.
