Tragic news out of New Hampshire where a hiker suffering from severe hypothermia on a trail near Mt. Washington died at a hospital after rescuers bravely faced driving rain, snow, and 80mph+ winds gusts to reach him.
Xi Chen, 53, of Andover, Massachusetts, was rescued from Gulfside Trail on Saturday night. Boston.com reports Fish and Game Department officers said they call from his wife who said he was in distress. She had received a text from Chen who said he was cold and wet and couldn’t continue:
“He further wrote that he felt he would die without a rescue.” NH Fish and Game Department
Rescuers carried Chen over a mile to the summit of Mt. Washington, where he was placed on a truck and driven back down the service road before being taken to a hospital in Berlin. He was unable to be revived after several hours of life-saving efforts.
