Xi Chen, 53, of Andover, Massachusetts, was rescued from Gulfside Trail on Saturday night. Boston.com reports Fish and Game Department officers said they call from his wife who said he was in distress. She had received a text from Chen who said he was cold and wet and couldn’t continue:
“He further wrote that he felt he would die without a rescue.” NH Fish and Game Department
Rescuers carried Chen over a mile to the summit of Mt. Washington, where he was placed on a truck and driven back down the service road before being taken to a hospital in Berlin. He was unable to be revived after several hours of life-saving efforts.
